If there’s anything good that came from the pandemic, it’s a growth in appreciation for the artisans and makers that craft the things we take for granted. For many, that appreciation turned into growing food, baking bread, handwriting letters and creating things by hand.

Three Crows Fiber, at the corner of Ellis Street and James Brown Boulevard, has stepped up to meet the need of those who got bitten by the knitting bug and have an appreciation for quality materials and handmade products.

“We’re about creating community,” says Jeff Pullium, one of the “three crows.” “We see the store not as a profit-making venture for us, but as a gift to the Augusta knitting community. I’d say that the most tremendous thing since opening has been people at the register who have poured out their gratitude.”

The other two “crows” are Becca Talley, who taught Jeff how to knit, and Karen Heid, who learned how to knit from her grandmother as a child. “It’s not your grandmother’s hobby anymore,” says Heid. In fact, 40 to 50% of the shop’s customers are under the age of 30.

Three Crows Fiber has something for everyone, with a wide variety of skeins in different colors, weights and materials. “We tried to emphasize yarns that would work in our climate,” says Talley, the designated curator. “We’ve been impressed at how many people want to buy local. In fact, Karen’s hand-dyed yarns are one of our bestselling lines.”

Traditional wool yarns, skeins of yak, alpaca, cotton and linen yarns can be found alongside patterns, instruction books, knitting needles, crochet hooks, project examples and several creative adjacent products like unique greeting cards and tea towels.

For those who want to learn or further perfect their skills, the staff at Three Crows Fiber is a great resource to help choose materials for a project or to work through a difficult spot. They also offer instructional classes for all levels. Sheep2Stitch owner Nicole Rapp teaches small groups how to knit, crochet and spin.

So, whether you’ve been knitting or crocheting for decades, or are just starting into the world of knitting possibilities, Three Crows Fiber is your source for quality materials and handmade products. Stop by the shop or visit threecrowsfiber.com for more information.
