I have to start this week with an apology to Lakeside. I was able to follow their team a little more this off-season and loved what I saw from top to bottom. Coach Steve Hibbetts and his staff made the kids work their tails off but also pick their spots to incorporate some fun, inspirational speakers and cultivated a true family atmosphere.
That is why I am kicking myself for picking them to lose a close game to South Aiken this week. The Panthers played nearly flawless football in a lopsided 36-21 win over South Aiken. The game was not nearly as close as the final score as the Thoroughbreds scored a couple of times late to make it more respectable. No player this weekend came close to the game tuned in by Panthers quarterback Jaden Taylor. The senior piled up 164 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 24 carries. He also completed 16 of 18 passes for 196 yards and two more scores.
So, my apologies Panthers – I am so glad I was wrong on that pick. I did correctly predict the other five games. Now lets see if we can go undefeated this week.
Last Week’s Picks: 5-1
Evans (1-1) vs. ARC (1-0)
Last Week: Evans lost to North Augusta 14-7/ARC topped Westside 3-0
Last Year: ARC hammered Evans 41-7
This will definitely be much closer than last year. I expect a dogfight between these two. I give a slight advantage to ARC, but it will likely be a low-scoring slugfest.
ARC 17 Evans 16
Greenbrier (0-1) @ Cedar Shoals (2-0)
Last Week: GB lost to Statesboro 31-0/Cedar Shoals won 49-43 in OT over Winder Barrow
Last Year: Cedar Shoals won 35-9
The Pack will come to play and give all they have, but Cedar Shoals is a solid bunch that poses a number of problems for the Pack.
Cedar Shoals 37 Greenbrier 14
Grovetown (1-1) vs. North Augusta (1-1)
Last Week: Grovetown topped Midland Valley 27-0/NA beat Evans 14-7
Last Year: North Augusta won 31-6
I sound like a broken record but this should be a tight contest as well. Grovetown bounced back nicely last week to blank Midland Valley and I give them a edge at home in this one.
Grovetown 19 North Augusta 16
Harlem (0-1) vs. Wash-Wilkes (0-1)
Last Week: Harlem lost a heart-breaker to Aquinas/WW lost to Elbert Co. 28-14
Last Year: Harlem won 54-25
Harlem really impressed me last week, giving Aquinas all they could handle. The Bulldogs also showed off a new and improved passing game. Washington-Wilkes has a great quarterback and running back combo in Donovan Anthony and Corey Danner, but I will take the Bulldogs.
Harlem 30 Washington-Wilkes 22
Augusta Prep (0-1) vs. Edmund Burke Academy (0-1)
Last Week: AP was idle/EBA lost to Bulloch Academy 41-0
Last Year: Augusta Prep won 48-21. Year ago.
Augusta Prep is extremely young and not very deep, but I am going to take the Cavs to get the “W” this week.
Augusta Prep 17 Edmund Burke 13
