Last week was my worst week picking Columbia County games since I started making predictions in 1997. I was 2-4 – wow, terrible! It is tough when so many teams are really close and anyone could win on a given week. Congrats to Evans, Harlem and Augusta Christian in particular this week. The Knights knocked off previously unbeaten Lakeside 14-7, Harlem dominated a solid Hephzibah team 45-20 and Augusta Christian picked up a quality win over Wilson Hall. Let’s see if we can improve a little on the picks this week.
Evan (3-2, 1-0) @ Heritage (3-3, 1-0)
Last Week: Evans beat Lakeside 14-7/Heritage shutout Greenbrier 27-0
Last Meeting: Evans won last year 31-13
Evans served notice that the road the region title goes through Cox Road with their thrilling last-minute victory over Lakeside. This week will not be easy, but the Knights should get the victory.
Evans 27 Heritage 21
Greenbrier (0-6, 0-1) @ Grovetown (3-3, 0-1)
Last Week: Grovetown lost on the road at Alcovy 28-21/Heritage beat Greenbrier 27-0
Last Meeting: Grovetown won last year 14-0
The Warriors are likely still fuming over last week’s loss to Alcovy (probably the officiating too, which I have heard lots of complaints about). They will likely get back on track this week versus winless Greenbrier.
Grovetown 20 Greenbrier 7
Screven County (5-1, 3-1) @ Harlem (4-3, 4-1)
Last Week: Harlem beat Hephzibah 45-20/Screven Co. was idle
Last Meeting: Harlem won last year 27-20
Harlem played an exceptional football game in their win over Hephzibah. Junior standout Cameron Garnett was easily the best player on the field. He rambled for 269 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Garnett also tossed for a score, and in his only play on defense, forced a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. That said, I was just as impressed with sophomore defensive lineman Vandre Thomas. Hephzibah had no answer for him. Remember this kid’s name, he is a stud and he is only 15 years old.
Harlem 26 Screven Co. 23
Alcovy (2-4, 1-0) @ Lakeside (4-1, 0-1)
Last Week: Alcovy upset Grovetown 28-21/Lakeside fell to Evans 14-7
Last Meeting: Lakeside won last year 40-12
Lakeside has to feel like they let one slip away last week. However, they have to forget the loss to Evans and focus on a much improved Alcovy squad. I think they will be just fine.
Lakeside 34 Alcovy 16
Augusta Christian (3-4, 2-4) @ Porter Gaud (3-4, 1-4)
Last Week: ACS knocked off Wilson Hall 34-14/Porter Gaud was crushed by Hammond 57-6
Last Meeting: Porter Gaud rolled last year 51-13
The Lions continue to play solid football and picked up a nice win last week over Wilson Hall. Porter Gaud will be a tough test, but I think they can get this one too.
Augusta Christian 31 Porter Gaud 27
