Barnwell is a bit more prepared for this year’s state title game on Friday at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C. Coach Dwayne Garrick said last season, his team was very new to the atmosphere and environment of a state title game.
This year, Garrick’s team has a much better, businesslike approach to Friday night’s game. The Warhorses enter the game 14-0 — second straight season, entering the state title game — and have demolished every one of their opponents this season.
Garrick added that he wants his team to treat Friday’s state game as close to a traditional Friday night as possible. He said it even helps that they have the first game. Last year, his team had the late game.
Barnwell will play Saluda at 5 p.m. Saluda is considered the home team.
For the Trojans, they’ve been the underdog throughout the South Carolina High School League Class A football tournament.
Ridge Spring-Monetta had to take out top-seeded Whitmore and second-seed Blackville-Hilda to earn a spot in the upper state championship game. There, it defeated Wagener-Salley in an Aiken County showdown for a spot in the state title game.
Under first year coach Brian Smith, the Trojans will play Green Sea-Floyds at Benedict College following the Barnwell game, for an 8 p.m. scheduled kickoff.
In GISA, Briarwood will face off against Gatewood at Mercer University on Friday for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
