106 hopefuls teed it up in Mexico on Thursday with a spot in the 2020 Masters Tournament on the line.
Colombian Ivan Camilo Ramirez sits atop the leaderboard with a 3-under-par 68 after the first round Thursday of the 2020 Latin America Amateur Championship at El Camalen in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Ramirez birdied five times over seven holes to overcome early bogeys on holes No. 2 and 3.
Lukas Roessler and Gabriel Morgan Birke, both of Chile, are each two shots back.
The winner will receive an invitation to the 2020 Masters Tournament, as well as exemptions to The Amateur Championship, U.S. Amateur Championship, and into the final stages of qualifying for the U.S. Open.
For the first time in the tournament’s history, the winner will also qualify for the 149th Open Championship at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England.
Former Arkansas Razorback lvaro Ortiz won the 2019 Latin America Amateur at Casa de Campo in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The native of Mexico shot 2-under-par at Augusta and finished in a tie for 36th, four shots behind Viktor Hovland for low amateur honors.
