CORRECTION: Previous versions of this article incorrectly stated who opened The Vineyard Wine Market. Roger Strohl opened it in 2004. The Chronicle regrets the error.

Columbia County’s popular Cork & Flame was recently honored in Wine Spectator’s 2020 Restaurant Awards.

The magazine’s annual program recognizes restaurants around the world as the top destinations for wine lovers. Cork & Flame was given the Award of Excellence, which recognizes restaurants whose wine lists feature a well-chosen assortment of quality producers along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style.

“It is an honor to receive the Wine Spectator award,” owner Roger Strohl said in a statement. “Thank you to our team members and the loyal patrons of Cork & Flame restaurant and wine market that helped make this happen. We appreciate the support and are looking forward to continuing to provide excellence for our patrons in the years to come. Cheers!”

Strohl and Chef Justin Hayes opened Cork & Flame 2018, although Strohl opened The Vineyard Wine Market in 2004. After 13 years as a standalone wine market, Strohl partnered with Hayes to form a unique dining experience for the Augusta area.

In addition to its creative menu with innovative cooking techniques and premium wines, patrons can also partake in wine tastings, wine dinners, exclusive chef’s experience dinners and private events.

Although the restaurant industry has been hit hard during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wine Spectator wanted to recognize restaurants as they have done each year since 1981.

“This year’s Wine Spectator Restaurant Award program celebrates restaurants’ resilience, dedication and bravery during these unprecedented times,” Editor and Publisher Marvin R. Shanken said in a statement. “We hope that all of our award winners and the people who make them special will find their way through the crisis to once again welcome us through their doors. We look forward to raising a glass together, and to new beginnings.”

Wine Spectator’s special Restaurant Awards issue will be available to readers July 14.
