After an exciting first week in the Augusta-area high school football season, the top 10 has some teams trending up from the preseason rankings.

Wynston Wilcox and Will Cheney reveal the Week One power rankings:

Wynston’s Top 10

1. Evans 1-0 (Last week’s ranking: 1) — No surprise here. Following a 58-0 win over Cross Creek to open the season, the Knights stay atop my area rankings. They’ll have a fun one against Hephzibah in their home opener.

2. Thomson 1-0 (3) — With a little bit of luck, the Bulldogs were able to secure a win over Jefferson County to open the season. They jump Harlem, who suffered a week one loss to Aquinas.

3. Aquinas 1-0 (7) — After the upset in week one, the Fightin’ Irish leap up four spots to No. 3 in my rankings. They played a complete game and earned themselves a top-5 spot this week.

4. Harlem 0-1 (2) — The Bulldogs suffered a week one loss to Aquinas. They were able to put up 33 points and the dynamic duo of Jeremiah Ellis and Cam Garnett caused havoc. They’ll bounce back and get in the win column this week against Greenbrier.

5. Fox Creek 0-0 (4) — With the South Carolina high school football season yet to start, the Predators await their season opener. They fall to No. 5 by default.

6. Strom Thrumond 0-0 (5) — Same deal with the Rebels. The first scrimmage is set for Sept. 12, so still a few weeks out for high school football in South Carolina.

7. North Augusta 0-0 (8) — Idle for a few more weeks, the Yellow Jackets await for their season opener.

8. Richmond Academy 1-0 (NR) — The Musketeers enter Week Two with a home win over Lakeside. They’ve also found their way into the top 10 for the first time this season.

9. Jefferson County 0-1 (9) — It was a seven-point loss to Thomson at The Brickyard for the Warriors. They come in at No. 9.

10. Grovetown 0-1 (NR) — To round out this week’s top-10 is Grovetown making its first appearance. While they did lose week one to Effingham County, there’s a lot of promise for their defense and they have the potential to stay in the top 10 long term.

DROPPED OUT: Hephzibah, Burke County

Will’s Top 10

1. Evans 1-0 (Last week’s ranking: 1) — Coming off a 58-0 rout of Cross Creek, the Knights are rolling in all three phases to begin the season.

2. Thomson 1-0 (4) — The Bulldogs began the season strong with a 21-14 win over Jefferson County.

3. Aquinas 1-0 (9) — The Irish punched Harlem in the mouth and announced their presence with authority in a 52-33 win. They’re not going anywhere.

4. Harlem 0-1 (2) — The Bulldog offense is firing on all cylinders. The defense, however, has some serious questions to answer before Harlem takes the next step.

5. North Augusta 0-0 (3) — Football is still a few weeks away in South Carolina. The Yellow Jackets open on the road against Blythewood on Sept. 25.

6. Strom Thurmond 0-0 (5) — The Rebels begin their season at home against Swansea on Sept. 25.

7. Fox Creek 0-0 (6) — The Predators open against Brookland-Cayce on Sept. 25 to begin their journey in the AAA classification.

8. Westside 1-0 (NR) — The Patriots opened things up with a convincing 45-7 win over Greene County. One of the area’s better defenses from last season picked up right where it left off.

9. Richmond Academy 1-0 (NR) — The Musketeers enter the top-10 after gutting out a 12-6 home win over Lakeside.

10. Grovetown 0-1 (NR) — Despite the loss to Effingham County, the Warriors’ defensive effort showed signs of better things to come.
