With dozens of festival and event cancellations throughout the area over the past seven months because of COVID-19, one local favorite will continue as the Merchants Association of Columbia County kicks off the Columbia County fair next week.

Although patrons will have to undergo temperature checks and maintain social distancing, the fair will still be held at the Columbia County Fairgrounds from Oct. 22-Nov. 1 with fun, food and rides for the whole family.

Some events such as the petting zoo will not be held and all programs will be held outdoors to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Spots will be marked in lines to encourage social distancing.

Nonetheless, Mike Zapata, chairman of this year’s fair, entitled 2020 Slice of Fair Fun, said it will be a good time for all.

“I think people are ready to get out and have fun,” he said.

Proceeds from the fair will be donated to local charities such as the Ronald McDonald House and the sheriff’s office’s “Shop with a Deputy” Day, as well as the 2020 Miss Columbia County Fair Pageant and the Dec. 6 Christmas parade.

School athletics programs will also have students working at concessions stands, and those proceeds will go toward their programs.
