As a mother of four under five, it may come as a shock for you to hear that our family of six visited the National Gallery in Washington this past December. I won’t claim it was a leisurely visit; it was rather like attending a speed-dating event held during a dodgeball tournament. There were rounds of studying artwork for approximately 30 seconds before arbitrating the next family fiasco.
We went, not because I enjoy terse conversations with concerned security guards or public humiliation, but rather because I believe deeply that beauty and culture should not be gatekept to certain locations, levels of affluence or states of life. And that is why the Sand Hills Garden Club flower show and botanical art exhibit, taking place downtown at the Morris Museum of Art, is so near and dear to my heart.
Presented every three years, Southern Exposure transforms the Morris Museum of Art into a celebration of floral design, horticulture, photography and education. Hosted by the Sand Hills Garden Club, a member of The Garden Club of America (GCA), the show includes floral designers from across the country creating original interpretations of selected works of art from the museum’s permanent collection.
